What happens if all those promises we've printed out and passed around the entire world start to lose their luster?
Modern Monetary Theory holds that since the dollar is the world's reserve currency, we can print as much as we want and it will go somewhere, from third world countries with weak currencies, to trading in the oil markets, to buying stock and bitcoin., as well as all that government debt that some of which gets spent blowing up some of those third world countries.
Yet all that means is the bubble is just that much larger.
What if all those overseas dollars start losing value and even Zimbabweans sense there are too many? Consider that in the spring of 1922 all the German marks in circulation wouldn't buy a loaf of bread in the fall of 1923. Yet the United States is not Germany. We are not going to spiral into a black hole of tribal rage. We are going the other way from tyranny, toward anarchy. Think oligarchs, cartels, gangs and militia, not The Donald as an orange Hitler. Remember our cultural glue is the dollar. The Donald is a New York hustler turned into ersatz super villain by a dollar chasing media.
What is going to happen is that when this bubble really starts to come unglued, disaster capitalism/predatory lending will come home to roost, as those buying up all that government debt, likely for pennies on the dollar, will use their political power to trade it for any Federal properties possible. National parks, interstate highways, mineral rights, "surplus" military equipment, etc.
Then on the other side, states will have to start issuing various local currencies, given all local banking systems have long been gobbled up by the big casinos. Which will create serious fractures in the Federal system. Likely local national guards will start forming into military arms of these increasingly sovereign states.
This will conflict with those oligarchs trying to buy up that federal property, as much of it is within various states. They will use their compliant media, tech companies and the shell of the federal government on their side.
Suffice to say, the rest of the world might be looking on in horror, but parts of it will also be breathing a sigh of relief.
